Fluid Power

Fluid Power

Hydraulic applications have always been the largest industry for continuous cast gray and ductile iron bars.

In particular, hydraulic manifolds that were at one time made from plain carbon steel are often converted to ductile iron because the strengths are similar, ductile iron has equal pressure ratings (Link to pressure rating paper) and the machinability is far superior:

      • Faster milling, longer tool life
      • Faster drilling
      • Minimal deburring
      • Responds to all surface treatments

Hydraulic cylinders for piston pump applications are often converted to ductile iron for similar reasons.  In addition to the machining advantages ductile iron cylinder barrels are used  because the steel piston is able to directly contact the nitride surface of the cylinder wall and eliminate the need to use a bronze sleeve as is the case with a steel piston pump.  H-Bar products are carefully engineered to produce consistent growth after heat treat.  A wide variety of grades are available depending on the engineering requirement of the piston pump and motor.

Other applications include hydraulic cylinder rod guides, pistons, glands, end caps, flanges, gear pump gears, swivels, swash plates spools and motor housings.
