Gray Iron

Gray Iron

Gray iron is the earliest and most widely used form of cast iron. It contains flake-shaped graphite dispersed throughout a metal matrix. This interconnected graphite structure gives gray iron its distinctive properties.

  • Tensile strength: ~40 ksi (275 MPa)
  • High compressive strength (up to 3× tensile strength)
  • Excellent wear resistance
  • Superior vibration damping
  • High thermal conductivity
  • Relatively brittle compared to ductile iron

Common applications:
Automotive engine components, piston rings, wear rings, cylinder sleeves, gears, machine tool slides, pulleys, and sheaves.

Specifications

Hualong produces 5 standard grades of gray iron in accordance with QT standards. HB30 and HB 40 grades conform to ASTM A48, class 30 and class 40 respectively:

1 For reference only.   Actual tensile strength depends on bar diameter and section size

2 40 ksi/275 Mpa minimum tensile in the midradius of bars < 6″ (155 mm)

3 Hardness range depends on bar size and location.  For specific BHN specifications please reference product specifications
